THE FALLING TONE IN ENGLISH PERFORMED BY THE SPEAKERS OF HANOI AND THE EQUIVALENT EXPRESSIONS IN VIETNAMESE
Abstract
The author of this article - The falling tone in English performed by the Speakers of Hanoi and the equivalent expressions in Vietnamese - especially deals with the communicative value of intonation in English in general, and its falling tone in particular from contrastive linguistics perspectives (that is to show some differences rather than similarities) with what we have called the equivalent expressions both verbal and non-verbal in Vietnamese by the speakers of Hanoi. In terms of prosodic events, it is said to be one of the rather difficult issues for the nonnative speakers such as the speakers of Hanoi to have a good command of English because of the abstract features of its own intonation in general and its falling tone in particular.
