Abstract

The study on soil properties and soil classification implemented following soil classification of  FAO-UNESCO is to identify the capacity and sustainable land use for agricultural production in Hai Duong province. The results of soil classification were showed out: In the plain area, there are 4 major soil groups consisted of: Salic - Fluvisols; Thionic - Fluvisols; Fluvisols and Acrisols with 9 sub soil units. In 4 those groups, the group of Fluvisols has occupied a largest area (about 80% surveyed area). This soil group is suitable for many crops such as rice, upland crops, fruit and short duration cash crops with advantages as flat topogarahy, good irrigation control and good soil fertility. Two other soil groups of Salic - Fluvisols and Thionic - Fluvisols (around 7% surveyed area) are mainly suitable for rice production and brackish aquaculture. In hilly area there was only one soil group of Acrisols (occupied 13% surveyed area). This group has capacity for development of fruit and forest trees.
