Abstract

The article investigates the possible relationship between IOD (Indian Ocean Dipole) with surface temperature and rainfall in boreal winter over Viet Nam in the period 1981 - 2020. The lag Pearson correlation was used to estimate the relationship IOD and surface temperature and rainfall. The results show that, for surface temperature, significant correlations are at lags of 0 to 5 months (lag = 0 - 5), especially in the central and southern provinces of Viet Nam.  Meanwhile, for rainfall, the correlations are insignificant on the Viet Nam. However, the correlations calculated with gridding rainfall data indicate significant
negative values on central and southern Dong Sea with lags of 0 to 3 months (lag = 0 - 3). These results suggest that, IOD can be considered as a potential indicator to forecast for temperature with 5 months in advance, and rainfall with 2 months in advance on Viet Nam
