THERMAL METAMATERIALS: THEORY AND APPLICATION
Abstract
Metamaterials are the artificial materials fabricated in special structures that
exhibit the exotic properties different from the naturally occurring materials. For
example, the well-known metamaterial is negative-refractive material used to
control the propagation of electromagnetic, optical and acoustic waves …
Thermal metamaterial is a new kind of metamaterials that has been interested in
the scientific community in recent years because of its ability to control and
guide heat flux inside the material in the manner which is not found in the
conventional physical phenomena. In this paper, the simulation of heat
conduction process occurring in the surface structure of two-dimensional (2D)
thermal metamaterials and the applications of this structure to produce "thermal
cloak”, "thermal concentrator", "thermal diffuser" and "thermal rotator" are
reported. In addition, the influence of geometrical structural parameters on the
thermal process control is also presented.
