Impact of international economic integration on Vietnam’s agriculture since Vietnam’s admission to WTO

Abstract

The article reviews some of the main impacts on agriculture since Vietnam’s admission to WTO in January 11, 2007

1. Some adjusted agricultural policies to conform to the road map of its commitments to WTO include (a) adjusting tax policy; (b) supporting the domestic production and exports, investment, and encouraging enterprises to invest in agriculture and rural areas; providing plants and animals, or providing financial support such as credit guarantee and credit preference.

2. Vietnam’s admission to WTO has left a number of impact on agriculture including: (a) public investment in agriculture and rural development and attraction of FDI into agriculture; (b) impact on GDP and position of agriculture in the national economy; (c) trading in agricultural commodities; (d) domestic agricultural production such as planting and animal husbandry and agriculture related services; (e) competitive edge of agricultural products.

3. Solutions to raising the competitive edge for Vietnam’s agriculture in the international economic integration

- Enterprises need to improving the quality management and food hygiene.

- Buiding the system to supervise the prices and raising the role of the Cosumers Association as a social feedback to the market.

- Controlling and assessing the impact of the imported agriculture items.

- Raising the values for agriculture products and their competitiveness via the technological renovation and raising the procedded agricultural items for exports.

- Working out a comprehensive strategy in exports of agricultural items.

- Experimenting the application of policy to insure agricultural production./.
