Finding a lost place: "Thien Kien Son" in historical sources
International Center for transliteration and translation of Buddhist Documentation Thiên Kiện Mountain 天健山 is an ancient place name located in the Thanh Liêm district, Hà Nam province, generally known for being the location of one of five “outer-palaces” during the Trần dynasty period (1226-1400). While the mountain was mentioned several times in pre-colonial official histories and geographical works, the lack of clarity in written historical sources as well as changes in place names resulted not just in the lost of the place name itself in the present landscape, but also in the disagreement in modern scholarship on its location. This essay is our first attempt to address both the sources and the debate, and by utilizing newly found sources including ancient maps and local artifacts, to put forward a conclusion on the actual location of the “Thiên Kiện Mountain”.
