Tóm tắt

This article analyzes the relationship between the Ottoman and Mughal Empires from the 16th to 18th centuries, highlighting the unstable nature of their ties despite their shared Sunni Islam. The authors argue that differences in strategy, perceptions of power, and regional priorities hindered the formation of a lasting political alliance. In the early period, indirect contacts between the Ottomans and Indian Islamic kingdoms including conflicts of interest with Babur were evident. In the 17th century, Ottoman diplomatic initiatives, such as Sultan Mehmed IV’s mission, failed due to the Mughals’ pragmatic foreign policy. Under Emperor Aurangzeb, relations nearly ceased altogether. Although there were later efforts to revive the relationship during the reign of Muhammad Shah, ties between the two empires effectively ended after 1748 due to the Mughal Empire’s decline and shifting Ottoman strategic interests. The article concludes that religious unity alone was insufficient for sustained cooperation, as geopolitical, power, and strategic factors were decisive.
