Building a Modern State in Meiji Japan

Abstract

The reform by Emperor Meiji in Japan in the last three decades of the nineteenth century was often considered as one of the most famous reform in the world history. One of the most important successes of this reform was that Japan was able to build up a modern state which could respond timely to the political and socio-economic development of the country at that time. In this article the author would like to emphasize on the two main discussions: 1. Some points of view on the state and struggle to build up a modern state in Meiji Japan. 2. The process of building up this modern state in Meiji Japan
