Abstract

Training, research and technology transfer are key factors for the development and affirmation of a university, especially recently when universities have been moving towards financial autonomy. The development of a science and technology business incubator (STBI) at the Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment (HUNRE) will promote research and technology transfer activities of staff, lecturers and students of HUNRE. Based on the survey of 57 small and medium enterprises operating in the field of environment in Hanoi, this study evaluated the current situation, development needs, advantages and disadvantages, and proposed solutions for successful building a STBI model at HUNRE. In order for the cooperation between universities and businesses to be practical, effective and sustainable, the parties should be aware of the benefits, respect and balance the interests. The university should give priority in technology transfer, provide high quality human resources, and support businesses in consulting and solving problems. On the other hand, businesses should support the university in students’ internships, visits, surveys, recruitment and employment; provide information about the labor market needs; regularly exchange and comment on training programs, models and training methods of the university; sponsor and support the university with facilities, information and resources within their business capacity.
