CORRECTING SOME SECOND- DEGREE ENGLISH MAJORS’ MISTAKES IN PRONOUNCING THE SAME COMPOUNDS AND FREE WORD GROUPS IN ONLINE CLASSES

Abstract

The article aims at finding out the second-degree English majors’s mistakes and corrections in pronouncing the same compound nouns and free word groups when they study “Pronunciation in Use” online at the Faculty of English in Hanoi Open University. A profound analysis will be done basing on a number of records (mp3) and images of soundwaves with waveforms, spectrogram, spectra, sound pitch and tenses...that are conducted by students via the software “Praat”. In each lesson, the records (mp3) and images of the 10 compound nouns and free word groups will be selected and compared at random among the 48 students. Students’ mistakes are always on the second component of the compound nouns but with the use of “Praat”, they made progress with their pronunciation. The results of the study can be useful for both English majors and teachers concerned.
