EDUCATIONAL AND WARNING VALUES OF KOREAN PROVERBS WITH DOG ELEMENTS (IN RELATION TO VIETNAMESE)
Abstract
Proverbs are fixed expressions in the form of short sentences with rhyme and
a stable structure that convey artistic messages. In addition to the functions of critique, satire,
and experience communication, proverbs also have profound educational and warning values.
While the educational value positively orients people to head towards the good, the warning
value plays the role of a wake-up call for people to stay away from risks and dangers. In this
article, we choose the methodologies of describing and analyzing semantic elements to clarify
the educational and warning values of Korean proverbs with dog elements. The educational
value of proverbial elements is expressed in the promotion of humanity, dignity, manners, and
duties, as well as the high appreciation of gratitude, work values, and human courage in life.
On the other hand, the warning value of proverbial elements refers to dangers, evildoers, and the law of cause and effect. Analysis results also showed that Korean and Vietnamese people
have many similarities alongside a few differences in the way of perceiving and associating
things as well as a method of expression.
