Some characteristics of diarrhea in piglet under 2 months of age in Son La province
Abstract
The result of investigation on 4401 diarrheal piglets under 2 months of age in Son La showed that:- The rate of piglet under 2 months of age suffering with diarrhea in Son La province was quite high, accounting for 28.7%; mortality rate due to diarrhea was 23.1%.- The diarrheal incidence of the piglets increased gradually by age.- The factors such as: the animal age, raising method, weather/climatic condition, veterinary hygiene etc., all these factors effected the incidence and mortality of piglet due to diarrhea.- 100% of the fecal samples of the piglets under 2 months of age was infected with E. coli- The isolated E. coli strains belonged to serotypes: O151, O146, O55 and O20.- The isolated E. coli strains were strongly virulent strains which killed the experimental mice within 36-48 hours.- Symptoms of the diarrheal piglets were white, yellow, stinking, loose stools with gas bubbles, thin, trouble walking, fuzzy fur, dry skin. If it was not treated in time, the animal would be stunted or died.
