Situation of using antibiotics at broiler chicken farms in Nam Dinh and Thai Nguyen provinces
Abstract
The study was conducted at 100 broiler chicken farms in Vu Ban district, Nam Dinh province and Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen province to assess the use of antibiotic in the process of raising chickens. The studied results showed that the use of antibiotics in raising chickens in the investigated farms was still common. There were 13 types of antibiotics used in the chicken farms, in which amoxicillin (76%), doxycylin (32%) and florfenicol (28%) were commonly used in Thai Nguyen province. In Nam Dinh, antibiotics were commonly used including ampicillin (28%), ampicillin-colistin (24%) and doxycylin-tylosin (16%). There were 54% of chicken farms in Thai Nguyen province using antibiotics with dose from 1.5 to 2 times higher than the using doses instructed by the manufacturers compared to Nam Dinh province (only 14%). The use of antibiotics without control in the chicken industry could increase the risks of antibiotic resistance of the pathogenic bacteria, affecting public health and causing economic losses to the chicken farmers.
