Abstract

Investigation on coccidiosis in goats was conducted in Vinh Long province and Can Tho city from August 2020 to June 2021. The purpose of this study aimed at determining the coccidiosis species and evaluating the treatment efficacy of amprolium and toltrazuril against the coccodiosis in the indigenous
goats in Vinh Long and Can Tho city. This investigation was undertaken on 414 goat fecal samples collecting from four goat age groups: under 4 months old, 4-12 months old, more than 12 months old and reproductive goats. The two drugs were used to treat coccidiosis with 4 treatment regimens for twenty-four goats infected with Eimeria oocysts at the infection intensity of level 3+ and 4+. The studied results showed that the goat herds in the surveyed areas were infected with coccidiosis at high infection rate (82.37%). The infection rate of goats in Vinh Long province (83.49%) was higher than that of the goats in Can Tho city (81.19%). The goats at all ages were infected with coccidiosis, of which the infection rate of goats was 98.20% for the goats under 4 months old, 91.43 % for the goats at age 4-12 months old, 75.79% for the goats at age over 12 months old and the lowest infection rate for the reproductive goats (62.14%). The goats at all ages were infected with coccidiosis with intensity from level 1+ to 3+. Particularly, the goats at age under 4 months old and 4-12 months old were infected at 4 intensity levels from mild to severe (from 1+ to 4+). The infection rate and intensity of goats at age 7-12 months old and over 12 months old were gradually decreased by age. The goat herds were co-infected with several coccidiosis species, the goat at age <4 months old and 4-12 months old were infected with
2 to 4 species per individual in 2 goat herds in 2 investigated sites. The co-infection rate with 4 species per individual was not found in the goats at age more than 12 months old and the reproductive goats. Four species of coccidiosis were identified, such as: E. alijevi, E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. christenseni and E. arloingi in both surveyed sites. The use of toltrazuril 5% with a dose of 1.4ml/2.5 kg body weight and amprolium 9.6% with a dose of 1ml/10kg body weight and 1.4ml/10kg body weight for coccidiosis treatment in five consecutive days have given high treatment efficacy.
