Study on risk factors and detecting virus type of foot and mouth disease in goats in Phonxay district, Luongphabang province, Laos

Abstract

The objective of this study aimed at analyzing the risk factors for foot and mouth disease (FMD) in goats in Phonxay district, Luongphabang province, Laos. The studied methods
included interviewing directly the technical officers and farmers to collect the primary data, then analyzed the pathology by retrospective method. The studied results indicated that there were 6 risk factors related to the incidence and the spread of FMD in goats in Phonxay District,
Luongphabang province in 2017 as follows: 1) There was the main road passing through the goat grazing places; 2) The goat farms located near the animal markets; 3) The goats were not vaccinated against the dangerous, infectious diseases; 4) The origin of the goat breed was not clear; 5) Periodical disinfection for the goat farms was not done; 6) Selled out the goat in the disease spreading time. These factors related and increased the risks for FMD wide spreading in the goats higher than 2.43 times, 2.56 times, 3.60 times, 4.59 times, 4.94 times and 3.92 times, respectively, compared to the goat grazing areas without the above risk factors. By using ELISA method, the FMD virus type in goats in Phonxay district, Luongphabang Province in
2017 was identified to be type O.
