Abstract

A STUDY ON THE VIETNAMESE HOLDING THE PRESIDENCY OF COCHINCHINA’S COLONIAL COUNCIL THROUGH PRESS MATERIALS
Colonial Council was an advisory agency of Cochinchine Government. Since establishing it, the agency’s member included French and Vietnamese councilman but French councilman always held ascendant in the Council. In the 1920s and 1930s, Vietnamese intellectuals in Cochinchina were more and more active actions and organized movements to change Colonial Council. In 1922, the number of Vietnamese electors and councilmen were growth but they could not hold the presidency. To cancel this unfair law, at the end of the 1930s, Bui Quang Chieu and Vietnamese intellectuals in Cochinchina impelled movement so that Vietnamese could hold the presidency of Cochinchina’s Colonial Council. That was an effort to improve the political position of Vietnamese in the colonial mode of Cochinchina.
