Developing worksheet activities to enhance creative stroytelling competence for grade 5 students through the “Canh Dieu” Vietnamese language textbook

Abstract

The 2018 Vietnamese Language Education Curriculum identifies writing competence as a central objective in primary education, with creative storytelling playing a key role in fostering students’ expression and creativity. Although Grade 5 students possess stronger linguistic thinking, vivid imagination, and broader life experiences, they often struggle with generating ideas, structuring plots, developing events, depicting characters, and choosing appropriate narrative perspectives. Worksheets designed to enhance creative storytelling competence serve as practical tools that guide students through step-by-step practice, helping them select details, express ideas coherently, and construct logical stories. Besides improving writing skills, worksheets also stimulate interest and encourage learner autonomy and creativity. This article examines the writing lessons in the Grade 5 “Canh dieu” Vietnamese Language textbook, analyzes the theoretical and practical basis for using worksheets, and proposes a system of scientifically designed worksheets with an appropriate question matrix and clear implementation procedures to enhance the effectiveness of teaching creative storytelling.
