Applying constructivist theory and game theory in teaching the introductory topic of statistics and probability in grade 3 mathematics
Abstract
This paper presents the application of Constructivist Theory and Game Theory in designing a learning plan for the introductory topic of statistics and probability for grade 3 students, following the competency-based orientation of the 2018 General Education Curriculum. Emphasizing the role of experience and interaction in learning, the study proposes a four-step process for constructing teaching activities and illustrates it through a sample lesson plan for the lesson: “The likelihood of an event occurring”. The activities are organized through various learning games to enhance student engagement, support observation and prediction, and enable students to describe the possible outcomes of events. These suggestions can serve as a useful reference for primary school teachers in implementing probability and statistics content effectively and appropriately for learners’ developmental characteristics.
