Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, the formation and expansion of the colonial regime in Indochina brought about significant conditions for the expansion of colonial law in Indochina. On one hand, the French colonizers imposed their rule and legal system on the local communities in Vietnam. On the other hand, they retained traces of the legal order of the existing feudal state in Vietnam. The expansion of the colonial legal system in Indochina led to pluralism and diversity in the legal system. This pluralistic legal system resulted in a fragmented legal system and conflicts between different legal systems. This article examines the process of the expansion of French law in Vietnam and the pluralism in law during the French colonial period in the 19th century.
