Abstract

Theravada Buddhism is enjoying a special place and role in the life and culture of the Khmers in South Vietnam. It influences and affects on many aspects of their lives. The Khmerian pagoda is not only a center for religious activities, it is also the place of activity of the whole community, the place to preserve Buddhist sutras, precious books. The pagoda is a sacred place and the pride of the Khmers. At present, the number of pagodas of the Khmers responds to their religious needs, but the number of monks and nuns tends to decrease. Khmerian monks and nuns in the near past, have actively participated to social activities while practising their religious lives. Transformations in Khmerian Buddhism of South Vietnam exhibit the active tendency of an effort to integrate and renovate so as to meet the requirements of a society on its way toward development.
