  • Nguyễn Văn Sang

Abstract

Impressment was a historical phenomenon taking place in the Anglo-American relations between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. The impressment created serious friction between the United States and Britain. This tension was heightened by the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair in 1807 and was a major cause of the War of 1812. Based on historical sources, the article analyzes the history of impressment and the efforts of both countries to abolish the impressment. The paper contributes to attempts to investigate the causes of the outbreak of the Anglo-American War in 1812 and the history of Anglo-American diplomacy in the first half of the 19th century.
