Asian objective values: An Asian and Western comparative study

  • Hồ Sĩ Quý

Abstract

Having cited outstanding authors, who had written
about Asian values, similarities which are shared by
most of persons interested in the issue of Asian values,
possibly invisible, are picked up by this writing.
The writing affirms that, across different cultures,
values of being human beings are largely indifferent or
compatible with one and another. It rarely finds any
value absolutely belonging to a “single” community;
what is honored in Asia then it is generally honored in
other parts of the world. Nevertheless, the matter lies
in that there remain differences between the boards of
values, of which the most significant point is the
difference of the status of individual values. Asians
consider “industriousness, love of labor” as the
leading values of being human beings; while
Americans recognize “self-reliance” as the most
respectful value, industriousness is also heavily
weighted but ranked the third following “self-reliance
and individual success”. Saying that Asians are
laborious, Jewish are wise or Germans prefer
punctuality…if it is true, it is only meant that such
value is more praised, prioritized than others. It is of
course absolutely not meant that only East-Asians are
laborious while others are lazy, or only Jewish are
wise but others are negligent or unclever…
Such difference is the difference of objective value.
The writer in this article gives his own definition of
the “objective value” concept.
