Concerning social sciences and humanity of Hanoi in the period of pushing industrialization and modernization (some initial thoughts)

  • Lại Văn Toàn

Abstract

Sciences of Thang Long (Ascending Dragon) -Hanoi in
any historical periods, or in the period of pushing
industrialization and modernization of the Capital
City in particular, result from the past science
development or at least that of Thang Long-Hanoi. In
the course of that developmental history, there are
“epoch-making milestones” that have entered into the
history and become the “blood and flesh” of social
sciences and humanity of Hanoi today. Thus, it is
important to understand social sciences and humanity
of Hanoi today as the result from their formulation. As
such, when one discusses the development of sciences
in general or social sciences and humanity of Hanoi in
particular, he/she needs to pay attention to the
following foundational points:
- A thousand-year history of Thang Long-Hanoi
through different periods, institutions, especially
under the regime of democratic republic of Vietnam
following the August Revolution in 1945 since then;
- Thang Long-Hanoi keeps the role of a political,
economic, cultural, science and international relations
center of the country; more particularly that of “the
great cultural and science center” of the country as
prescribed in the Ordinance on Hanoi Capital City.
- It is also important to admit the historical significance and impacts, direct or indirect, of certain
political and social events on science and technology,
particularly on social sciences and humanity.
The author also recounts significant achievements of
the social sciences and humanity in general and of
Hanoi Hanoi in particular since Vietnam has
implemented the renewal policy from the Sixth
National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam
(in December 1986), affirming the role of social
sciences and humanity in the period of
industrialization, modernization and international
integration of the country at the time being.
