Abstract

Development model of East Asia and Development model of Southeast Asia are the two concepts mentioned by David Dapice and other experts from Harvard school in their advisory report submitted to the Vietnamese Government in 2008. The report indicated the stories of success of the Republic of Korea, Taiwan and other East Asian nations in how to become Newly Industrialised countries or Newly Industrialized Economies (NICs/NIEs) and (relative) failure of  Southeast Asian nations that have not been able to (or can not) override the trap of development. This article explores the applicability of these experience lessons to the context of Vietnam as well as solutions for Vietnam’s development from the cultural and human perspectives. It discusses following contents: 1) Ambition of the time of growth and warnings; 2) Dragons, tigers of East Asia and impressive lessons; 3) East Asia and Southeast Asia models of David Dapice and aides; and, 4) Suggestions for Vietnam.
