Agriculture, farmers and rural area in Vietnam today and tomorrow

  • Đặng Kim Sơn

Abstract

In Vietnam, agriculture, farmers and rural area have a radically important role to play in the course of building and development of the nation, particularly in the renewal process over the past twenty years. Nevertheless, it seemed that in this course agriculture had been undermined; farmers had not enjoyed benefits commensurate with their contributions; and, rural area had been lagged behind and cleaved from urban prosperity. This was an abnormality, not only threatening economic, social and environmental stability of the country, but also posing a danger of restricting the domestic market and hindering the supply of essential natural resources for continued industrialization. To surmount out of this situation, it is recommendable that the state and people need to make relevant decisions with highly political will.

The book (consisting of four parts) written by Dr. Đặng Kim Sơn helps readers to figure out to some extent the real situation of agriculture, farmers and rural area  in Vietnam in the past twenty years of renewal (1986-2007) by indicating achievements recorded, difficulties and deadlocks. The book also includes suggestions concerning the direction and policies with a view to bring the country’s agriculture, farmers and rural area to further development.
