Creating a civil society in Vietnam from European experiences

Abstract

Civil society historically is considered a product of development. Hence, in recent years civil society has become a topic drawing interests in research, exploration and seeking ways for its creation in various countries around the world. In Europe, civil society plays a leading role in dealing with political, economic, social and cultural issues or matters related to gender, environment, international debts, HIV prevention, globally-debated policies, social criticism, the protection of disadvantaged social groups, making social capital, social-economic governance, establishment of funds or foundations, improving social awareness and generating social resources, promoting democracy, transparency in social activities, etc. Thus, civil society is also a theme magnetizing special interest of researchers and social workers. This article provides a sketch on the European theoretical framework on civil society, upon which the author presented some emerging issues in creating a civil society in Vietnam with some relevant recommendations.
