Abstract

The socialist-oriented market economy as defined by the Communist Party of Vietnam is an economic model that is virtually new, unprecedented not only in Vietnam but also in the world. Additionally, challenges and difficulties facing us in the course of economic development of the country over the past years as well as new problems arising from the global economic and financial crisis have forced us to conduct theoretical research and to review practices of this economic model in order to define more clearly and specifically the contents of socialist orientation driving our country’s market economy. This would then help us to take deeper and broader reforms, and to clarify the theoretical and practical foundation on which a master economic model for Vietnam is to be developed in the coming time.

The above-mentioned issues were brought out for discussion at the national workshop, convened in Hanoi in September 2009, on the theme: “A master economic model in the transition to socialism in Vietnam: theory and practice”.
