Abstract

The world has undergone a global financial crisis and economic downturn for the first time since the end of the World War Two, which had deep impacts on the development process of all countries. This has posed a requirement on us to review, assess essential development theories, to select and supplement their appropriate aspects, thus conceptualizing significant standpoints. Vietnam, after nearly 25 years of successful renewal, is entering a new turning-point development period that requires breakthrough solutions, creating a new jump, capabilities and engines for development. The Theoretical Study Council under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam has recently convened a national conference on “Major economic theories in the new global context and their implications for Vietnam”.

This article summarizes main contents presented and discussed at the conference, which included among others: three economic theories: Marxism, Keynes doctrine, neo-liberal school, and applicability of these theories to the reality of development in Vietnam.
