Abstract

Vietnam has travelled along with a history of thousand years of building and defending the country for its independence and sovereignty. The state was established in Vietnam at a very early stage and has had a critical role to play in executing the class function and societal function to serve common interests of the community, the nation.

This article attempted to explore, analyze and explain unique characteristics of the Vietnamese traditional state from around mid-first millennium B.C (state of Van Lang) to end of the 19th century (Nguyễn dynasty). It came to affirmatively conclude that placing emphasis on independence, sovereignty, the associated relation between the vested royal interests and common interests of the society, which is represented by “public intimacy”, is the precious asset left over by preceding generations
for us.
