Integrated development of the Mekong Delta - a critical breakthrough in attracting investment

  • Nguyễn Xuân Thắng

Abstract

The Mekong Delta is the largest arable region in Vietnam, while it is a vast delta in Southeast Asia and the world. Numerous policies, programmes and projects have been adopted and put in place by the Party and the Government of Vietnam for regional development integration, but over the past years the Mekong Delta has not yet fully developed its potentials, particularly there is lack of a breakthrough in integrating regional development, not creating a strong competitiveness in attracting investment and investment for development.

In this article, the author presented some views on how to promote regional integration in the new context of development in order to make a breakthrough in attracting development investment. Measures as such to be undertaken include among others: linkage of the Mekong Delta in the coming period should be considered in the new context of regional and international integration; integration of the Mekong delta shall need to overcome a series of challenges and bottlenecks for growth, re-identifying the vision and new development thinking for the whole region; regional integration should be carried out to achieve a harmony based on five pillars (economic-social-environmental-cultural-political) of an approach to sustainable development, avoiding risks in the development process. The author also made some policy recommendations.
