Abstract

The paper presents the research results of vowels of Bhnong ethnic language through some dialects in 5 villages (plây) in Phuoc Son mountainous district in Quang Nam province of Vietnam. Currently, there are 18 vowels, including 12 monophthongs and 6 diphthongs in Bhnong language in Kadhot Mang village. It also provides homophone phonetic contexts in Bhnong that prove the existence of vowels. Some vowels have tense and lax variations when combined with certain endings, but there are also variations in pronunciation in other villages. In particular, vowels are pronounced with a much higher pitch in Kanang village than that in other villages. These are new findings about Bhnong language in general and Bhnong vowels in particular.
