THE WISDOM AND MEANINGS HIDDEN IN THE DONGSON BRONZE DRUM - A NEW APPROACH IN EXPLORATION

Abstract

Time has veiled and obscured most of the values of our past, leaving a historical and cultural heritage that is incomplete and difficult to decipher and understand. Dongson Civilization leaves behind many mysteries that historians and researchers in modern time keep questioning but could not yet find satisfactory answers. The scope of this research encompasses several theories which attempt to explain various existences found in the remnants of Dongson Civilization and most specifically in the remaining samples of Dongson Bronze Drum – one of thre monumental representatives of age. The research covers the discovery of meanings engraved on the overall decorations; the symbol of star at the center of the drum face; and the various theories on the development, functional and spiritual roles of the Dongson Bronze Drum including possible spatial navigation, chronographical and horological functions.
