THE INTER-SEMIOTIC TRANSLATION MOVIE: F. DOSTOEVSKY'S A GENTLE CREATURE (1876) AND LE VAN KIET'S GENTLE (2014)

Abstract

This paper approaches F. Dostoevsky's A Gentle Creature (1876) and Le Van Kiet's Gentle (2014) from inter-semiotic translation. We dissect the transmutations of narrative and cultural structures from a source/original text to a target/adaptative one. Hence, we shed some light on the director's “localizable” strategies, naming: Dostoevsky's work telling the story aboutthe-nineteenth-century Russian love and marriage was “rewritten” bythe adaptative filmGentle telling the story about contemporary Vietnamese love and marriage, that were religionized and imbuedwithChristian redemptive essence.
