Impacts of weather and environmental conditions on the fishing activities of fishers in the former Can Gio District, Ho Chi Minh City
Abstract
This study analyzes the impacts of weather and environmental factors on the fishing
activities of fishers in the former Can Gio District, Ho Chi Minh City. A sociological
survey was conducted using structured questionnaires with 200 fishing households
across Thanh An Commune, Long Hoa Commune, and Can Thanh Town. In addition, 20
experienced fishing households participated in in-depth interviews to provide detailed
insights into fishing seasons, techniques, and observed changes over time.
Beyond primary data, the study utilized secondary sources, including socio-economic
reports of Can Gio District (2022-2024), data from the District’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and relevant specialized literature. Field observations were
also carried out to verify and supplement the collected data.
The findings indicate a decline in marine species and degradation of biodiversity
in Can Gio’s coastal waters, driven by erratic weather patterns, severe environmental
pollution, and, most critically, overfishing using destructive fishing gear that has depleted
local fishery resources. The paper proposes several measures to strengthen the adaptive
capacity of fishing communities and promote the sustainable development of the local
capture fishery sector.
