Effect of narcissistic leadership on employees’ turnover intention in hotels: the mediating role of job stress

Abstract

Narcissistic leadership plays a vital role in influencing employee behavior in hotels. However, very few studies have been conducted on the impact of narcissistic leadership on employee turnover intention. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between narcissistic leadership and employee turnover intention and the mediating role of job stress. This study used a questionnaire to survey 181 employees from ten 4-5-star hotels in Hanoi from April to June, 2024. SPSS 22 and PROCESS were used to analyze the data. The results indicate that narcissistic leadership impacts hotel employees’ turnover intention and job stress. Job stress mediates the relationship between narcissistic leadership and employee turnover intention. From the results of this study, several recommendations are proposed for hotel leaders, such as avoiding the recruitment of highly narcissistic individuals and establishing a support network to help employees cope with work-related stress caused by narcissistic leadership, including seeking support from colleagues and friends.
