Writing skills are recognized by most English learners in Vietnam as a big challenge. One of the indispensable elements to constituting a complete article in English is the use of word combinations. However, many English learners, including students at universities, often make mistakes when combining words. This study aims to understand the types of word combinations commonly used by students and the common mistakes they make when they write essays in English. The authors use the document observation tool, or specifically the student's essay, to collect the necessary data for the research, then conduct analysis by means of text analysis with the system. suitable encoding. Research results show that verb-noun and adjective-noun combinations are used the most by students. On the other hand, verb-noun and adjectivenoun combination are the two types of student word combinations that have the highest frequency of mistakes; Meanwhile, the noun-verb combination has the highest error rate. When using the wrong word combinations, students often make mistakes in verbs and adjectives. Based on these results, the authors propose some measures to help teachers and students themselves overcome mistakes when combining words.
