AN ACTIVE AND INCLUSIVE TEACHING APPROACH OF PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS IN ORDER TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ SOFT SKILLS AND FOSTER LEARNING AT THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY

Abstract

The course Probability and Statistics is an important subject in the training program of any technical universities including Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF). Every academic year, there are hundreds of students in the university participating in the course of Probability and Statistics section (3 credits). In this paper we analyze the advantages and disadvantages of traditional teaching methods and introduce a new approach in teaching Probability and Statistics at TUAF to improve soft skills for students and motivate students to study more actively as well as help students have more opportunities to express their own understanding during classroom time. The teaching method mentioned in this article has been implimented by the authors of the article during the lectures in class for the course of Probability and Statistics (delivered in Vietnamese) for full-time students and two other courses of Elementary Statistics and Applied Statistics for Biological Science (delivered in English) for full-time students of Advanced Education Program.
