DETERMINANTS OF HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURE ON EDUCATION IN RED RIVER DELTA REGION

Abstract

Househoold investment in education and training has been focused and increased in recent years in Vietnam, but this amount still remains inadequate. The study analyzes the factors influencing people's education expenditure in 11 cities and provinces at Red River Delta region in 2018. The Tobit censorship regression model is implemented for household eduction expentidure and socio-economic and demographic variables, based on the Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey 2018. The average share of education expenditure is about 4-7% of total household expenditure. By level of education, the average spending on higher education is the highest. Factors significantly influencing people's educational expenditures are household income and head characteristics (education attainment and gender), education subsidies, tutoring, place to live. The research provides scientific evidences for policy-makers who plan to develop and train human resources in the region in the future.
