Abstract

Communication is a basic and urgent need, an important condition for the
formation and development of an individual’s personality. The study aims to describe the
current situation of communication needs of the elderly living in nursing homes in Hanoi
and propose some recommendations to help meet their communication needs. By using
quantitative and qualitative research methods on 337 elderly people living in 4 nursing centres
in Hanoi, from November 2022 to February 2023, it studies on communication needs of the
elderly in different fields, including the need to be shared and confided; the need to strengthen
relationships; the need for information exchange, knowledge and experience transfer; the need
to be respected, to contribute ideas; need for empathy, mutual help; social activity needs. On
that basis, the study proposes a number of solutions to enhance forms to satisfy the spiritual
and communication needs of the elderly living in nursing centres in Hanoi.
