Abstract

Allegating that the Nguyen Dynasty banned Christianity, killing many clerics and laity, including one Spanish cleric, France has allied with Spain in a hurry to prepare forces and weapons to attack and invade Vietnam with the mission of ”civilization” and ”salvation”, opening the Mau Ngo war. Da Nang is the first locality in the country to carry out its mission in protecting the country with majestic battles Dien Hai citadel. For more than 18 months (from September 1, 1858 to March 23, 1860), the Franco-Spanish coalition continuously launched attacks to pacify and control Da Nang. However, with courage, craftiness and creative way of fighting, Da Nang’s army and people actively fought and foiled the plan of quick attract and quick victory, forcing the French - Spanish coalition to withdraw from Da Nang. This article will clarify the basis of French and Spanish military alliances in the goal of invading Vietnam, the heroic fighting of the Vietnamese people in general and Da Nang in particular, leading to the failure of the French - Spanish coalition.
