Research, criticism of Vietnamese musical theater in Bach Khoa magazine
Abstract
Bach Khoa magazine (1957-1975) published many research articles, criticisms, and news about various types of theater: Tuong (classical drama), Cheo (satirical folk theater), and Cai luong (reformed opera). Many articles outlined the characteristics of classical drama (a traditional Vietnamese opera), highlighting the comedic and tragic stories that connect the stage with social life. Although Cheo was not widely practiced in southern Vietnam, it still received significant attention in the magazine because of its deep national identity. The articles on Cai luong (a type of modern Vietnamese folk opera) were diverse in content, covering a wide range of topíc, including its historical development, profiles of artists, and the dynamic theater market in urban areas.
