The role of the intelligentsia in Vietnamese society at late 19th and early 20th century
Abstract
Stemming from the quintessence of Chinese culture, Confucianism has
strongly developed into various countries that share some commonalities and influenced their
ideological development. The introduction and acculturation of Confucianism to Vietnamese
thoughts and culture is associated with the upheavals of the nation’s history. During that
time, Confucianism has been “nationalized” and “modernized” thanks to patriotic intellectuals.
Accordingly, the destiny of Confucianism in Vietnam has been closely connected with fulfilling
Confucianists’ responsibility for their country. During the process, the differences between the
two pairs of categories including “Center - Edge” and “China and countries affected by it” does
not directly influence the ideological nature of a nation.
