Abstract
Applying the theory of regional development cooperation and utilizing
relevant studies, the article analyzes five determinants of regional economic linkages in the
South Central Region of Viet Nam. The results show that: (1) The geographical structure of the
region shapes the form of association; (2) Policies on decentralization is hindering linkages;
(3) Short-term thinking, local thinking hinders the motive of linkage; (4) The benefits of
association are not commensurate with possible costs and risks, and (5) The coordination
mechanism still has many shortcomings. Building on these findings, the article makes five
recommendations for the central and local government to strengthen the regional economic
linkages in the region in the coming period.
