Neuro-psychiatric characteristics and related factors of seafarers who had health examination in the institute of marine medicine in 2023

Abstract

Aim: To describe the neuropsychiatric situation and some factors related to the health of seafarers in the Institute of Marine Medicine in 2023. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted through direct interviews with 300 seafarers, using the DASS 21 to assess neuropsychiatry disorders and some related factors. Result: The rate of seafarers with mental disorders was 17% (10.34% were anxious, 2.33% were stressed, and 2.33% were depressed). Seafarers with the level of mental disorder: mild anxiety (8.33%), mild stress (3.33%), mild depression (2.33%), moderate anxiety (2,0%). Some factors related to the neuro-psychiatry of seafarers: seafarers felt lonely, were isolated from the mainland (OR = 3.08 ; 95% CI: 1.8-5.2); seafarers had sexual emotional tension (OR = 1.73; 95% CI:1.05 - 2.85); seafarers worried about accidents and disasters occurring at sea (OR = 1.87; 95% CI:1.1 - 3.0) ;seafarers were worried about medical care on board (OR=2.59; 95%CI:1.54-4.36). Conclude: Neuro-psychiatric disorders is a mental health problem of seafarers. To prevent neuro-psychiatry disorders for seafarers, it is necessary to improve living and working conditions on board ships.
