Evaluation of the effects of the cupping method combined with electroacupuncture in treating cervical scapulohumeral syndrome at Hai Phong Medical University Hospital in 2021 – 2023
Abstract
Objectives: Description of clinical and subclinical characteristics of patients with cervical scapulohumeral syndrome at Hospital of Hai Phong Medical University in 2021 – 2023, comment on the effects of cupping method combined electroacupuncture in treating cervical scapulohumeral syndrome patients. Subject and methods: 58 patients were diagnosed with cervical scapulohumeral syndrome according to guidelines of Ministry Heath (2014), at the Faculty of Traditional Medicine, Hospital of Hai Phong Medical University, from November 2021 to December 2023. Clinical study, comparing before and after 12 days of treatment. Results: The group of patients over 60 years old accounted for the most (53.4%), females are more than males (72.4% and 27.6%), 44.1% overweight, and 12.1% obesity. There are 94.8% reduced physiology curve and over 89% multilevel disc herniation from C4 to C7 on cervical spine MRI. After 12 days of treatment with the above method, the patient improved cervical spine range of motion, reduced pain (VAS score), and improved daily living functions (NPQ score) statistically significantly. Some unwanted effects have been recorded such as skin redness and burning, related to the level of heat and the duration of the cupping tube. After adjustment, no side effects appeared. Conclusion: The cupping method combined with electroacupuncture is a simple, easy-to-apply, and effective non-drug treatment method that can be applied to treatment of the cervical scapulohumeral syndrome. It is recommended that medical staff undergo skill training and be cautious in practicing cupping combined with electroacupuncture.
