Analysis of the drug list utilized at Kim Son district general hospital, Ninh Binh province, in 2023
Abstract
Objective: To describe the composition of the drug formulary and analyze drug utilization using the ABC/VEN method at Kim Son District General Hospital in 2023. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on the drug formulary from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, at Kim Son District General Hospital, Ninh Binh Province. Results: The drug formulary consisted of 346 items, divided into chemical pharmaceuticals, which accounted for 90.17% of the total number of items and 84.18% of the total value of drug utilization, while traditional medicines/herbal drugs accounted for 9.83% of the total number of items and 15.82% of the total value of drug utilization. Locally produced drugs predominated, representing 74.57% of the total number of items and 64.89% of the total value of drug utilization. The ABC/VEN analysis showed that class A drugs accounted for 75.2% of the total value of drug utilization and 13.58% of the total number of items, while class C drugs comprised 72.84% of the total number of items. The essential (E) group had the highest proportion (70.81% of the total number of items and 75.35% of the total value of drug utilization), whereas the non-essential but high-value AN group, comprising 13 drugs, accounted for 15.75% of the total value of drug utilization. Conclusion: The drug formulary at Kim Son District General Hospital in 2023 largely met the hospital’s treatment needs. However, some drugs in class A, which are non-essential but have high utilization value, should be carefully managed to optimize drug costs for the hospital.
