Abstract

Background: Submucosal tumors are raised or protruding lesions in the gastrointestinal tract and usually covered by normal mucosal. Most tumors are discovered incidentally by endoscopy and have no specific clinical symptoms. This study was conducted to record the results of treatment of patients with submucosal tumors of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum by endoscopic submucosal dissection in Viet Tiep Hospital. Patients and methods: 21 patients with submucosal tumors treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection at the Department of Endoscopy - Functional Investigation of Viet Tiep Hospital. Retrospective combined with prospective methods. Results: The proportions of men and women were 42.9% and 57.1% respectively. Patients were mainly in the age group of 51–70 years old (p > 0.05). The most common clinical symptom was epigastric abdominal pain. 57.1% of submucosal tumors were located in the stomach. The average tumor size was 9.2 ± 3.7mm. 66.7% of submucosal tumors were completely dissected endoscopically. 23.7% of cases was reported bleeding and were clamped. Histopathological results were GIST tumors accounting for 28.6%. Conclusions: Endoscopic mucosal dissection is a safe, effective, economical method and shortens the treatment time for submucosal tumors of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Therefore, it needs to be developed and widely applied in gastrointestinal endoscopy.
