Abstract

Objectives. This study was conducted to describe some characteristics of the subjects and to determine the rate and severity of wasting in children aged 6–59 months with pneumonia at Haiphong Children’s Hospital from 01/07/2023 to 30/06/2024. Subjects and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 571 children with varying degrees of pneumonia severity. Results. Males accounted for 56.6%. The age group 12 to < 24 months accounted for 20.0%, and the 24 to < 36 months group accounted for 27.7%. The highest proportion of patients came from rural areas. Most admissions occurred in February, March, April, July, and August. The rate of wasting was 10.3%, including 11.1% in males and 9.3% in females. The highest rate of stunting was observed in the 48–60 months age group (23.5%), and the lowest in the 12 to < 24 months group (4.4%). Moderate wasting severity was seen in 4.7%, and severe wasting in 5.6%. Moderate and severe wasting were more common in males, and higher in the 36 to < 48 months and 48 to < 60 months age groups. Conclusions. Children with pneumonia had a high rate of wasting. When treating children with pneumonia, doctors, nurses, and parents must pay close attention to nutritional care to help children recover more quickly.
