Abstract
Objective: Investigating the current status of tooth wear and some factors related to this condition in the elderly at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2024. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted on 117 elderly participants (over 60 years old) at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from December 1, 2024, to May 30, 2025. Data were collected through a pre-existing questionnaire, and the oral health status of the participants was examined and determined by doctors from the Department of Stomatology, Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Results: The rate of cervical tooth wear was 70.1%, primarily in the premolars (85.7%), with the main level of wear being grade 2 (43.9%). Factors related to cervical tooth wear in the elderly include brushing technique: horizontal brushing poses a risk of cervical wear 2.6 times higher than vertical brushing and 2.2 times higher than circular brushing. Replacing the toothbrush every 3 months or less reduces the incidence of cervical tooth wear. The habit of using a soft-bristled toothbrush also helps reduce the risk of cervical tooth wear.
