Results of surgical treatment of popliteal artery injuries at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital from 2020 – 2023

Abstract

Overview: Popliteal artery injury is a common cardiovascular surgical emergency. In the Hai Phong, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital handles most of the vascular emergencies in the area. Therefore, the study "Treatment outcomes of popliteal artery injury by surgery at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital from 2022 to 2025" is necessary and significant for professional training and practice. Research Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study combined with retrospective and prospective data collection. Results: 30 patients with an average age of 33.96 ± 14.66 years. The clinical presentation mainly consisted of indirect signs. Most patients underwent emergency surgery within 6 - 12 hours after the injury. The most common types of arterial damage were contused artery, contused thrombosed artery, or contusion with rupture. The primary surgical methods were direct artery anastomosis and autologous vascular grafting. Treatment outcomes: The majority of patients had good results, with an amputation rate of 6,67%. Conclusion: Popliteal artery injury is a common vascular emergency. The main treatment method is surgical restoration of arterial blood flow. The treatment results are generally good, but there are still cases of necrosis requiring amputation.
